Τheatre of the No

 

Theatre of the  NO and director Nicolas Zlatoff are  seeking three performers for a new English-language production of «Hamlet» for February 2027.

( Rehearsals will be held on January 2027)

The production unfolds in two distinct parts. In the first, the audience encounters a company  rehearsing Hamlet: reading, improvising, testing possibilities, and searching for the play in front of spectators. In the second, three performers and a small number of extras perform Shakespeare's  Hamlet, with the three principal performers sharing the full range of characters and moving rapidly between roles.

 

Casting:

• 1 performer to play primarily Hamlet, as well as several other roles.
• 1 actress to play primarily Gertrude and Ophelia, as well as several other roles.
• 1 performer to play primarily Claudius, as well as several other roles.

 

We welcome applications from performers of all ages and backgrounds. Strong English-speaking and acting abilities are required.

 

Additional Casting Opportunities:

 

Theatre of the NO is currently casting for four additional productions to be presented during the 2026–2027 season.

Performers who wish to be considered for these projects are welcome to submit their materials as part of the same application. Please indicate clearly in the subject line which production(s) you wish to audition for.

 

Working Method

The rehearsal process is grounded in Analysis through Action, as developed by Konstantin Stanislavski in his final years at the Moscow Art Theatre, and later by Maria Knebel and Anatoli Vassiliev (this is not « Stanislavski’s system but further works). The work also draws on additional tools developed by director Nicolas Zlatoff through long-term artistic research.

 

Working from texts that are not yet memorised and are sometimes only newly discovered the performers attempt to act them in their own words, alternating moments of analysis with practical  études and improvisations on stage.

The aim is to develop living, sensitive compositions for each scene: structures that allow

performers to remain oriented while improvising, to think and discover while acting, and to  continually test hypotheses in performance. Over time, performers develop the ability to think on stage and gradually « clothe their thoughts in the words the author has given them.» (Maria Knebel).

 

Previous experience with Analysis through Action is welcome but not required.

 

Audition

 

• The audition will consist of a practical introduction to the fundamental tools of Analysis through
• Action on a scene from Hamlet.
• Participants will work in groups of three to five people on a series of exercises and short scenes directed by Nicolas Zlatoff. No prepared monologue is required.
• The audition is designed both as a selection process and as an opportunity for performers to discover the working method used in the production.

 

Audition Dates:

9, 10, 11  July 2026

Rehearsals and performances will be conducted in English
